Why Some Mobile Apps Feel Slow Even On New Phones

Has anyone else noticed that some mobile apps feel slow even when they’re being used on a relatively new phone? I’ve come across apps where opening a screen takes several seconds even though there doesn’t seem to be much happening on the screen.

It isn’t always a hardware problem. There can be quite a few reasons for this.

Images And Network Requests

Large images are an easy thing to overlook. If an application downloads unnecessarily large files, the loading time can increase considerably, especially on mobile networks.

The same applies to network requests. If a screen has to contact several different services before it can display anything, the user may be left staring at a loading indicator.

Caching can help in some situations. Information that doesn’t change frequently doesn’t necessarily need to be downloaded again every time a user opens a screen.

Performance Needs Real Testing

Another issue is testing only on fast internet and a powerful development machine. Real users may have older phones, unstable connections, or limited data.

This is something I’d consider when looking at a mobile app development agency. Performance should be tested under less-than-perfect conditions rather than assuming everyone has the same device and connection.

Battery and memory usage matter too. An app can appear fast but still cause problems if it constantly runs background processes.

In the end, good performance usually comes from lots of small technical decisions rather than one magic optimization.
